Brief History
The Sarafina Foundation started from World Vision Ghana’s Child Parliament in the Savelugu Municipality of the Northern Region of the republic of Ghana. The child parliament was formed to empower children from rural communities to advocate on all forms of violence against children. From child labour, through child trafficking to child marriage, the group held series of advocacy campaigns in and outside the municipality.
Madam Sarafina Akisichab joined the child parliament in her days at the Pong-Tamale Experimental Junior High School. She rose through the ranks to become the minority leaders of the club, and eventually, the speaker of the club in her school and the municipal child parliament club. Under her leadership as the speaker of the child parliament, the group rescued a number of children who were forced into early marriages and got them integrated back to school.
Sarafina Akisichab also took her advocacy works to the national and international level. In 2019, she represented Africa at the European Development Day celebration in Brussels, Belgium. Whilst at the forum, she had the opportunity to meet with other children and world leaders to discuss her advocacy works and the need to end all forms of violence against children.
In 2020, she also travelled to the Philippines, where she took part in World Vision International’s Triennial Council Meeting. Whilst in the Philippines, she also shared her advocacy works with other children and world leaders. Sarafina Akisichab took part in other global events where she has shared her experience in child-led advocacy and the challenges she has faced, her motivation to persevere and the world she dreams of.
In 2022, she won the maiden edition of World Vision International Emerging Leaders Award. An award to help her touch more lives through her advocacy works. Sarafina Akisichab plans to invest the award into skills training for out of school children in rural communities in Northern Ghana and the campaign to end all forms of violence against children.
Sarafina Akisichab is currently a second year student at the University for Development Studies, where she is pursuing Bsc. Nursing. She dreams of becoming a medical doctor in the future. She dreams of a world where children will be given the freedom and support to enjoy life to the fullest.
